Dr. Sabapathy is the current Chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery, Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery and Burns, and the Director of Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore, India. From 2010 to 2013, he has been appointed as President of different Surgeon Associations in India, with the Brachial Plexus Surgery Group of India as the latest. He was also the Congress President of the 12th Triennial Congress of the International Federation of Societies for the Surgery of the Hand, and the 9th Triennial Congress of the International Federation of Societies for Hand Therapy, both held in New Delhi in 2013; and the 8th Congress of World Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery in Mumbai in 2015.
He obtained his degree in General Surgery in Madras Medical College, and his Plastic Surgery degree in Stanley Medical College. In 2007, he, together with Dr. Robert Acland published a book called Practice Manual for Microvascular Surgery where he wrote 24 chapters. Dr. Sabapathy is also a Guest Editor for Special Issues of International Journals and has published 89 write-ups in different medical journals around the world. In his career, he was able to garner a total of 77 distinguished awards and honors, and was able to speak at and attend scientific meetings and events –– a total of 298 in India, and 190 overseas.
In 1995, Dr. Sabapathy headed a campaign of Ganga Hospital with the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Metropolis called “Save the Working Hand” which emphasized the need for safety in the workplace. This project was then renamed to “Help for the Hands in Need” which serves not only injured workers but also children with spastic hands and birth defects. Ganga Hand Injury Support Group was also formed in 2007 which helps people sho suffer serious hand and upper extremity injuries.
