Prof. Akio Minami is this year’s Honorary Lecturer, with a Tajima Lecture entitled "Modified Sauve-Kapandji Procedure for the Distal Radioulnar Joint Disorders of Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis."

Hailing from Japan, Prof. Minami obtained his doctorate in medicine at the Hokkaido University School of Medicine in 1972 and his PhD at Hokkaido University in 1981. He has been a professor at the Hokkaido University School of Medicine since 1990. In 2012, he became the Director of the Hokkaido Spinal Cord Injury Center.

Aside from his teaching career, he has also served as the President of the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Hand from 2006-2008 and the Congress President of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association from 2007-2008. He also held the Editor-in-Chief position for The Journal of HAND SURGERY (Asian-Pacific Volume) from 2009-2014. He is also a member of various Surgery of the Hand societies.

Prof. Minami is the 2010 recipient of the Hokkaido Science and Technology Award for his contribution to the development of basic and clinical research on upper-limb surgery; the Hokkaido Medical Association Award; and the Award of the Development of JOA.
